Importance of Accessibility
What is accessibility and why is it so important? According to the W3C (World Wide Web Consortium) and WAI (Web Accessibility Initiative) the definition of web accessibility is: Content is accessible when it may be used by someone with a disability.
In other words, people with disabilities might experience barriers when visiting web pages that prevent them from accessing web information.
Since the Web becomes an increasingly important resource in many aspects of life, including education, employment, commerce, health care and more, it is of pivotal importance for the web content to be barrier-free and hence accessible.
Accessibility guarantees the provision of equal access and equal opportunities to people with disabilities by increasing the overall usability of websites and benefits not only them, but also all other visitors.
Benefits of Accessibility
-
Wider target group:
People with disabilities nowadays constitute an important population rate. A non-accessible website would turn away this group.
-
Search Engine Optimization:
Search engines appreciate accessible websites, and hence they reward accessibility with higher ranking in search results.
-
Improved User Experience and website performance:
Enhanced browsing experience, easy navigation and direct access to essential content are most appreciated features for users and hence constitute perfect means of engaging your audience.
-
Demonstration of corporate and social responsibility:
Show respect to ethical and disability issues.
-
Satisfaction of legal requirements:
There is a growing body of national laws and policies which address accessibility of ICT, including the Internet and the Web. Some laws refer to the establishment of a human or civil right to ICT, while others state that any ICT product sold in a given market must be accessible. And there are still other approaches.
